Journey with Gris

“You are lost the moment you know what the result will be.”

Juan Gris (1887 – 1927)

The Spanish painter spent most of his life in Paris and joined the avant-garde artists working there. He built upon the basics of early Cubism and influenced the movement in new directions, making his works most characteristic of it.

Gris is best known for his personal version of Synthetic Cubism, based on found shapes and textures, simpler forms and brighter colors. His background in mathematics, physics and engineering has earned him a systematic eye for geometric compositions, fragmented objects and sharp-edged planes.
